But the tube (or “valve”) microphone offers a condenser capsule whose large diaphragms can be wired up to create omni, figure-of-eight and cardioid polar patterns – and six additional ones in between. The tube mic’s design is inspired by the very early tube microphones. Like its ancestors, the t.bone retro Tube II can be used for voice applications and various instruments alike.
High pass filter and pad

The three patterns have slightly different frequency responses. But all of them have surprisingly airy trebles, whereas frequencies commonly perceived as sharp are slightly reduced. All patterns feature an enhanced bass response in close proximity to the sound source. If that’s too much, a switchable high pass filter reduces the low frequencies if needed. A 10 dB pad enables the microphone to handle a maximum sound pressure level of up to 146 dB. Microphones that aren’t prone to distortion at high levels often are noisier – especially tube microphones. But the Retro Tube II’s numbers are very good, starting at 14.8 dB(A).

The vacuum tube inside the Retro Tube II’s body needs to be heated. And both sides of the capsule must be transmitted separately, as they’re combined in the power supply. A special cable is required for this, which is why the microphone comes with a special 7-pin XLR cable measuring 10 metres in length for connecting it to the power supply. The t.bone Retro Tube II comes as a complete set including the microphone itself in a wooden box, the power supply, an elastic shock mount, a windscreen, the multi-pin microphone cable, a power cord and a lockable case.
